Opportunity for local actors and singers to perform at The REP
The REP are looking for actors and singers to be part of a community production of Bertolt Brecht’s The Mother, translated by Mark Ravenhill, to be performed in our largest auditorium, The HOUSE. The production will be directed by Tessa Walker and the Mother will be played by well-known local actor Lorna Laidlaw.
This is a rare production of one of Brecht’s earlier and most revolutionary plays, using Hans Eisler’s original music. The production is part of the Epic Encounters festival season, which includes a range of talks, films, cabaret and comedy events exploring the themes of Brecht’s Epic Theatre.
The play follows the journey of a mother whose main concern is the quality of her soup, until she tries to protect her son from imprisonment by distributing his illegal protest leaflets for him. Gradually, she gets embroiled in the fight for equality and fairness, and becomes the strong willed figurehead for the war against the corrupt ruling classes.
Join The Mother in her march for freedom. We are looking for adult (18+) amateur performers of all ages for speaking parts and for our chorus who will be required to sing and act in non-speaking roles.
Rehearsals will take place during evenings and weekends from January to March 2014, with more intensive daytime and evening rehearsals at The REP during production week 10 – 15 March. There will be two performances on Saturday 15 March 2014.
Auditions will take place Monday 16 December 6.30pm – 9.30pm at The REP. This will be a workshop audition; applicants will not be required to prepare an audition performance.
To apply please send your acting CV or a summary of your performance experience and explain why you would like to be involved in the production. Please state if you are interested in a speaking role or if you would prefer to be in the chorus. There are limited places in the audition and in the production, so we cannot guarantee a place in the project if you apply, but we will make the process as open as possible.
Deadline for applications: 11 December.
Please note applicants will need to be available for the audition on 16 December, and all applicants must be available for rehearsals during the week of 10 March, including the entire day on Saturday 15 March for both performances.
Please send applications to TheMotherCommunityCast@birmingham-rep.co.uk or Alison Solomon, The REP, Centenary Square, Broad Street, Birmingham, B1 2EP
