Robert North
Robert North is a director and choreographer. Robert created the choreography and dance story development for The Snowman in 1997.
Robert was born in South Carolina and educated in England. He was an art student before studying at The Royal Ballet School.
In 1966 he joined London Contemporary Dance Theatre. He then danced with the Martha Graham Company in America for
four seasons before returning to London in 1969 for London Contemporary Dance Theatre’s first London season. He danced and
choreographed for LCDT and in 1980 became co-artistic director of the company. From 1979–1981 he also taught modern dance at The
Royal Ballet School. In 1981 he became artistic director of Ballet Rambert. From 1986–1990 he freelanced in Europe and America, and
in 1990 became artistic director of the Teatro Regio in Torino. In 1991 he took up the post of artistic director at the Gothenburg Ballet in
Sweden, which he held until 1996.
He left Sweden to return to freelancing for a year and in 1997 was appointed director of the Corpo di Ballo dell’Arena di Verona in Italy.
From 1999–2002 he was artistic director of Scottish Ballet and is now director of the Krefeld/Monchengladbach Ballet.
Robert has worked with dance companies throughout the world. He has created over 90 ballets including: Troy Game, Death And The
Maiden, The Annunciation, A Stranger I Came and Entre Dos Aguas. Full-length ballets include: Elvira Madigan, Romeo And Juliet, Living
In America, Prince Rama And The Demons, Life, Love And Death, The Russian Story, The Snowman, The Cradle Will Rock, Eva, Orlando,
Ragazzi Salvaggi and Carmen.
In 1997 he created the choreography and dance story development for The Snowman at Birmingham Repertory Theatre. The
production transferred to The Peacock theatre in London from December 1998 and has been revived annually since then.
