Call Out for New Playwrights
The Discovery programme is looking for the next generation of talented female writers of South Asian and nb descent
Kali Theatre in collaboration with Birmingham Rep have today announced that applications are open for the 2023/24 Discovery programme, a free playwriting programme for aspiring female and nb playwrights of South Asian descent.
The programme will run from September 2023 to March 2024, and selected writers will experience:
- Two playwriting workshops led by leading female practitioners.
- Dramaturgical support to develop their 10-page submission into a 20-minute play.
- Rehearsal with actors and director.
- Two public performances of a staged reading as part of a showcase for industry, friends and family.
- A bursary towards travel expenses and childcare.
Discovery is open to UK based female writers of South Asian and nb descent, who have at least one parent who is descended from the diaspora of the India subcontinent.
Applicants must be age 18+, eligible to live and work in the UK, and have not had a full length play professionally produced.
No previous playwriting experience is necessary.
Discovery Taster Workshop
Interested applicants are also invited to attend a free Taster Workshop where you can meet the Discovery team and kickstart your playwriting journey,
This Taster Workshop will be held at Birmingham Rep on Wednesday 21 June, from 6pm – 7.30pm, and will include an Introductory Workshop on Playwritiing with dramaturg Aisha Khan, Co-Director Beth Kapila & Helena Bell, who will offer hints, tips and guidance for those who have never written a play before,
Applicants who can’t attend this workshop can still apply for the Discovery Programme.
