Meet the cast of the world-premiere production of Floella Benjamin’s inspirational story

Yazmin Belo

Yazmin Belo, trained in Musical theatre at vocational (the BRITS school). Belo graduated in 2020 at the Southbank Centre University finishing with a 1st class Hons in Acting. Since then Belo has made appearances in The Bogus Woman and Immigration Crisis The Musical  (Camden Peoples Theatre) and BITE YOUR TONGUE (Hackney showroom, Talawa Theatre Company) to name but a few.

Caitlin Drake

Caitlin graduated from Italia Conti in 2019 and was nominated for the 2019 Spotlight Prize.

She made her professional debut in the world-premiere of Emily White’s Pavilion, directed by Tamara Harvey, at Theatre Clwyd, followed by The Brief & Frightening Reign Of Phil ( National Theatre/Bret McKenzie/The New Zealand Festival).

She has recorded work with BBC Radio Cymru & the North East Wales Archives, and appeared in the short film, Homework.

She is delighted to be working at Birmingham Rep in Coming To England.

Connor Ewing

Connor trained at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

Theatre Credits: The Phantom Of The Opera (UK Tour); Nativity! The Musical (UK Tour/Hammersmith Apollo) and Oklahoma! (Gordon Craig Theatre/Grange Park Opera).

Tarik Frimpong

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Tarik (he/him) is a multi-disciplinary artist and creative.

Film and TV credits include: Mary Poppins Returns, The Little Mermaid (Disney); Big Night Of Musicals (BBC1) and the upcoming release Aladdin Live! on Disney+.

Theatre credits include: The Wiz (Hope Mill Theatre); Aladdin (Prince Edward Theatre); Bring It On (The Athenaeum, Melbourne); iNk’d (Colchester Fringe); MADIBA (Australian & New Zealand Tour); ZUP (La Compagnie Urbaine, Switzerland) and The Lion King (International Tour).

Research & development credits include: choreographic workshops for Bat Out of Hell and Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs

Stage and dance credits include: FKA Twigs, Justin Bieber, Aston Merrygold, Keala Settle, Kwaye, Missy Higgins, Melbourne Fashion Week, Erica, Sobol’s Wallow and The Weekly (ABC).

Choreography credits include: Associate Choreographer for Beautiful (UK Tour); Choreographer for Make-A-Wish Annual Gala (2015); Redken Brews Official Launch (Melbourne, Australia) and Resident Choreographer for FX Entertainment. Tarik has assisted choreographers including Joey Pizzi, Tara Nicole Hughes, Rob Rich and Freya List.

Other Work: Television commercials for Kmart and Pringles; Modelling for Vogue (Online), Paul Smith, Samsonite, K-mart and Hard Yakka and Motion capture artist for the WWE Champions 2022 video game.

Tarik is thrilled to be working at Birmingham Repertory, and to be a part of sharing the remarkable, and inspiring life story of Baroness Floella Benjamin. He would like to thinks his friends, family, teachers and agents for their ongoing support.

Nesah Gonazales

Nesah trained at Royal Academy of Music (Masters Degree in Musical Theatre). She was Awarded a Disney Theatrical Scholarship to attend the Academy and during her time there was honored a Toni V Fell Prize winning overall 1st place. She also attended WacArts (3yr Professional Diploma: MT)l

Theatre credits include: The Proms At The Minack (Minack Theatre) and Harry Poppers & The Terf Child (Two box production).

Workshop credits include: Longitude (Newsrooms).

Kojo Kamara

Kojo is an Actor, Writer, Saxophonist.

His credits include: The Outlaws (BBC1); The Beast Must Die (Britbox); There She Goes (BBC2) and King Lear (National Theatre). As a writer, he was shortlisted for the Royal Court Writers Group, works for the charity InterACT Stroke Support, was a mentee on the Africa in London Mentoring scheme.

His vision is to become a published playwright developing stories for TV/cinema/stage which celebrate unheard voices from his African heritage. These will be fresh and unapologetic, showcasing the ‘light and shade of Africa’. – Kojo is a proud Anthropology geek.

Paula Kay

Paula has enjoyed working as a performer for almost 20 years. She trained on scholarship at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and has enjoyed musical theatre roles including: In the Heights (Kings Cross Theatre); A Comedy About a Bank Robbery (Criterion Theatre) and Dancing in the Streets (Cambridge Theatre/UK Tours) which afforded her the opportunity to be the body double for Diana Ross in Nashville Tennessee’s Madame Tussauds.

Jay Marsh

Jay trained at Rose Bruford.

Theatre credits includes: Violet (Charing Cross Theatre); Bubbly Black Girl With Chameleon Skin (Theatre Royal Stratford East); Side Show (Southwark Playhouse); Sunny Afternoon (Harold Pinter Theatre); The Rat Pack (London Palladium & International Tour); Reflection Day (Theatre 503); Porgy And Bess (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre); A Taste Of Honey (Greenwich Theatre); Prince Of Egypt (Dominion Theatre); Miss Saigon (UK Tour); Fences (Duchess Theatre); Christmas With The Rat Pack (Wyndham Theatre); Desert Boy (Birmingham Rep); Elegies For Angels, Punks and Raging Queens (Shaw Theatre); Effigies Of Wickedness (Gate Theatre) and Cherry Picking Cotton (Albany Theatre).

Dale Mathurin

Dale Mathurin trained at the Manchester School of Theatre graduating in 2014.
He was inspired to sing and perform from a young age and was a part of the Anna Fiorentini Theatre and film School from 2002 to 2005 where he trained to sing and dance.
He went on to do a Performing Arts Diploma at the Barking College of Performing Arts further allowing him to develop as an entertainer.
Upon graduating from the Manchester School of Theatre he went on to tour in the USA with the ‘Aquila Theatre’ Company with Wuthering Heights and The Tempest.
He then went on to join the Royal Shakespeare Company as a member of the King and Country Tour. He continued with the RSC playing a variety of roles in Richard II, Henry IV Part 1, Henry IV Part 2, Henry V & The Famous Victories of Henry V taking him around the UK, back to the USA & around China.
Dale has also performed in popular shows more recently such as The Comedy About a Bank Robbery and the most recent revival of Evita at the Regents Park Open Air Theatre and also working with Pilot Theatre Company and The Belgrade Theatre on Crongton Knights.

Bree Smith

Bree trained at Arts Educational School.

Stage credits include: Aunt Em/Glinda in The Wiz (Hope Mill Theatre); Flower in Tomorrow May Be My Last (Union Theatre); Ensemble in Evita (Regents Park Open Air Theatre); Grandma in Dick Whittington (Theatre Royal Stratford East); Rosalia/1st Cover Anita in West Side Story (Royal Exchange Theatre); African Villager in The Book of Mormon (Prince of Wales Theatre); Henrietta in Scrooge the Musical (Leicester Curve Theatre); Ensemble in Wonderland (UK Tour); Ensemble for The Olivier Awards.
