Heart Flower Memorial Domestic Abuse Exhibition
The Yarn Fibre Collective are a women’s group that put together a yarn art installation for International Women’s Day. Their main reason for this is to spread awareness about Gender Based Violence, including Domestic and/or Sexual Violence, Femicide, Coercion, Physical and Psychological Abuse. It is a hope that one day Gender inequality will become a thing of the past.
They understand that men can also suffer from abuse, but statistically we know it’s women who largely bear the brunt of domestic and sexual violence. We all know that in the UK alone, two women are murdered every three days.
The exhibition was open from Mon 6th – Sun 12 Mar from 12pm – 6pm.
The yarn installation aims to place a spot-light on the challenges women face both inside and outside the home. Either from a male, partner, parent, brother, son or complete stranger. Each flower in the instillation represents a women who has died in violent circumstances. We can’t imagine the pain and loss their family members are going through. We would hope that the loss of the lives of these wonderful women serves as a constant reminder of how far we still have to go in terms of finishing Gender Inequality for good.
This instillation consists of three heart memorial gardens, one for 2019 (where 128 women were murdered), one for 2020, (110 murder victims during the beginning of lockdown), and a third heart for 2021 (144 women murdered), so a total of 382 flowers.
They have used data from Femicide Census and relevant online articles and would like to mention here the women’s charities that are fighting to change government legislation around Gender Based violence in all of its forms. AVA (Against Violence and Abuse) and Agenda Alliance.
Yarn Fibre Collective
The Yarn Fibre Collective started off as a neighbourhood community group. The weekly art class have been running at The Rep for over 20 years.
Charismatic motivator, Tracey Dolby (1966 – 2022) taught the art class for over a decade with passion and creativity.
When the global pandemic forced theatres to close, Tracey continued the classes online with witty updates, quizzes and challenges for the group. Sadly, Tracey passed away in 2022.
Continuing Tracey’s legacy, Amy Carroll now leads the Art Class in the The Rep’s Learning Hub. Recent projects included 3-D mini sculptures for Jack and the Magic Beanstalk, producing a HIV memorial quilt and creating an array of stage props using recycled materials.
