From the birth of pirate radio in the 1980s to the emergence of Grime music in the 2000s, Birmingham has been at the forefront of creating new sounds and genres of music, telling stories of working class and Black lives in Britain.

In his groundbreaking social history, Where We Come From, journalist Aniefiok Ekpoudom travels the country to paint a portrait of the dawn and boom of UK Rap and Grime.

Taking us from the heart of South London to the West Midlands and South Wales, he explores how a history of migration and an enduring spirit of resistance have shaped the current realities of these linked communities and the music they produce.

0121 Legacy, produced by Punch Records, documents Birmingham’s distinctive contribution to the Rap and Grime scene, featuring interviews with Birmingham music legends such as Jaykae, Lady Leshurr and Mist and creating a vital archive of the contribution of musicians from our city on music that has been felt across the world.

This event brings together Aniefiok Ekpoudom, writer and performer Casey Bailey and artist manager Jess Monroe, as well as performer Auden Allen to celebrate the history and legacy of UK Rap and Grime in Birmingham.
